Büsi checklist: Everything your cat needs to get started

The moment when a velvet-pawed roommate moves in is exciting - for you and especially for your cat. In this article, we'll show you which basics you should have to hand and should definitely not be missing from your cat's household.

Oh wow! I would have been glad of this input 13 years ago. Not because I didn't have everything for Mowgli and Nemo, but much more: some of it! Countless scratching posts went to waste back then, toys were also only moderately exciting and the bowls we had at the beginning were totally wrong and just what you buy when you go shopping inexperienced ?

That's why we thought we'd put together everything you need to make your start together a success!

In this article, we'll show you which basics you should have to hand - from food and bowls to toys and retreats. Good food is the be-all and end-all

We start with the most important thing first. Namely with nutrition. Cats are carnivores and need High-quality wet food with a high meat content ??. Grain, sugar and additional attractants do not belong in there??! You may not yet know what your pets like. That's why we offer you our free trial packs here. Just because your cat turns up its nose the first, second... third time doesn't mean it will never like it ??.

Litter box & litter: The quiet little place

Remember that you always need one more litter tray than the number of cats in your household. Cats are clean and sensitive animals - and quite picky when it comes to „quiet places“. This gives each cat enough privacy, avoids stress and prevents messes. Especially in multi-cat households, this ensures harmony - and clean floors. ?

The litter trays should be open at the top and large enough. A small entrance to a closed litter box can lead to litter box bullying in a multi-cat household. What's more, cats don't like the so-called «festival litter boxes» any more than we do.

We recommend using odorless bedding. We have been using the EVER CLEAN (because it is «ever clean») Cat sand made from clay. The advantage of this sand is that it clumps extra strongly, so you only have to change it completely very rarely. Topping up with fresh cat sand from time to time is enough for a few weeks. We also use the Cat's Best Original cat litter very well. However, we regularly replace it completely as soon as the layer is only approx. 10-15 cm high.

Where do you put all your pets' droppings? They definitely don't belong in the toilet. Even if there is cat sand that allows this according to the manufacturer.

You should not do this for the following reasons ?❌??:

Disposing of your cat's droppings is very simple. Cat excrement, urine and used litter belong in the household waste ?(not in the organic waste garbage can, not in the toilet and not in the compost).

We therefore recommend a disposal system that allows you to collect the lumps and dispose of them with your household waste as soon as the bag is full. We use the Litter Champ (suitable for multi-cat households) and the LitterLocker (slightly less capacity). We are delighted with both systems.

Easy-care ceramic bowls and underlay mats

There are countless different types of bowls for cats. We advise against using stainless steel or plastic bowls. Unfortunately, cats can get chin acne from these materials. We can therefore recommend the ceramic bowls from WOLTERS from the «Meshidai» series recommend. They come with a beautiful wooden base and are dishwasher-safe, making them very hygienic and easy to clean.

Suitable resting places for your furry friend

Retreats and places that are intended for your cats are important. Whether high up or in a cozy corner - you will find out what your furry friend likes best. The right place for a bed can usually be determined based on behavior. If your furry friend often sits by this one window, it could be that a window bed would look good there.

Cats like to be with their humans. That's why we recommend providing enough sleeping space in the living area where people often spend time. For anxious cats who don't like fireworks and thunderstorms, for example, caves are suitable where they can retreat to for protection. When temperatures rise, it is particularly important for cats to drink enough - but many house pets find this difficult?. A ceramic drinking fountain can work wonders here: The gently flowing water encourages cats to drink, stays fresh for longer and also makes the fountain a beautiful eye-catcher in the home.

Play, fun and activity

There are almost no limits when it comes to toys for cats. Whether Intelligence and fumbling games, Balls, with which your cats can occupy themselves independently, or Game fishing and everything that somehow resembles Catnip smells - here, too, you need to find out what your new arrivals like best.

The highlights for us are the TRIXIE CAT Activity Strategy Game «Turn Around» and the Cat fumble house. We also have the Catnip balls from TRIXIE, which we «cover» as required so that they can be cuddled with. But NONE of this tops our senior Nemo's YEOWWW! Chicata Banana! This is his favorite thing to do in bed in the morning ?

Species-appropriate scratching posts

It is important that you also offer your house tigers some scratching opportunities. However, a scratching post is usually not enough. Unfortunately, we cannot offer you any scratching posts due to lack of space. We recommend that you steer clear of cheap trees costing CHF 80 and spend a lot of money unnecessarily for 500 «Stutz» plush monsters.
